Gunplay – Westside Ride (Video)
Admittedly, Triple C’s member Gunplay is an acquired taste. However, this Maybach Music Group/Def Jam Records artist has moments in his swelling catalog that absolutely stun me. The Miami-based rapper churns out content in the mixtape circuit, and he’s known to provide unique spins on classic instrumentals. The recent video for “Westside Ride” blends two such examples, pulling from Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg’s first track together as well as an Ice Cube album cut produced by QDIII.
Rather than just stylize the track, ‘Play went to Nickerson Gardens and filmed the first half with some real-life gang-bangers. He then hit South Central’s Slauson Avenue for the second. If you love the animated, free-form deliveries of Redman, Willie D, and Volume 10, I sincerely motion to give my personal favorite artist on the MMG roster a chance.
