De La Soul Reworks Some Of Their Own Classic Lyrics On This J Dilla Beat (Audio)

On March 26th, De La Soul is releasing Smell The D.A.I.S.Y., the group’s first mixtape since 2006 (not counting the Nike project). The release pairs Posdnous, Dave, and Maseo with some unreleased/under-heard J Dilla productions, who was the trio’s dear friend and collaborator since the Stakes Is High days.

Following “Dilla Plugged In” at the top of the month, the crew now releases “Vocabulary Spills.” The song, with a dusty vocal mix and distorted mics (perhaps something De La picked up in the years working with Gorillaz), reworks some classic ’90s D.L.S. lyrics (Dave opts for “Stakes Is High” while Pos taps into “The Bizness.”) Moreover, with a crew now in their forties, the song shows that these ’80s alums can still talk incredibly sick, and confidently on the track—with good reason.

De La Soul is ramping up for the mixtape, and two albums to follow. After years in an apparent drought, the musical rainfall is shaping up to be lovely.
