De La Soul Unleashes Their J Dilla-Produced Smell The D.A.I.S.Y. (Mixtape)

During a relatively quiet year for the mixtape medium, three Long Island veterans and a late Detroit mainstay have shattered the tranquil waters. As planned, De La Soul released Smell The D.A.I.S.Y. today (March 26th). The 30-minute mixtape pairs Posdnuos, Maseo, and Dave (fka Trugoy) with the music of their late musical collaborator, Jay Dee.

D.A.I.S.Y. has stood for “Da Inner Soul Y’All” for over 25 years, and that’s what De La and Slum Village (and Dilla on his own) helped so many Heads tap into. This one, according to the cover art (below) translates to “Da Inner Soul Of Yancey,” which is Jay Dee’s last name. This is a benchmark project for De La Soul to look back on their own path of evolution.

Kick back and listen, and know that sometimes Hip-Hop gives Heads just what we’ve been asking for…
