Yasiin Gaye’s Amerigo Gazaway Is The Latest DJ To Honor James Brown (Mixtape)

The same month Amerigo Gazaway released the second volume (or “Side Two,” as he called it) to Yasiin Gaye, the Marvin Gaye and Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) mash-up, he’s back for more. After two acclaimed volumes on his free downloadable Y.G. series, Amerigo sets his sights on another late Soul/R&B music pioneer: James Brown.

Following DJ J. Period and DJ Scratch’s respective mixtapes honoring “The Godfather of Soul,” Gazaway laces up The Big Payback, Volume 3: J.B. And The Soul Mates. In addition to profiling three decades of James Brown joints and jams, the mix weaves in appearances by Nas, Bob Marley, Mobb Deep, The Notorious B.I.G., Fela Kuti, and others. Panning from genre to genre, the third volume in the Brown series shows that J.B. affected nearly everything in Pop music throughout the last 50 years.

“I’m not sure any other artist has left their imprint on popular music, especially across so many genres, as much as James Brown has,” said the DJ in a press statement. “With as many of today’s hit songs that were built around some sort of James Brown flip, it’s almost like he had a say in what the music of future generations would sound like without even knowing it.”
