Sound Bwoy Bureill Was Intended For Heltah Skeltah? Smif-n-Wessun & Da Beatminerz Recall (Video)

This past Saturday (January 10), Smif-n-Wessun’s debut album, Dah Shinin’, turned 20 years old. The Wreck Records release from General Steele and Tek was a benchmark moment for the Boot Camp Clik, and largely perceived as a follow-up to Black Moon’s Enta Da Stage, given the tight-knit collective’s overlapping production core, Da Beatminerz.

These days, Smif-n-Wessun (who spent nearly a decade of their career under the Cocoa Brovaz moniker) are still standing strong. Joined by Pete Rock, they released Monumental in 2011, on their longtime home of Duck Down Records.

The circle is still tight. While Smif-n-Wessun have not worked with Da Beatminerz since 2005’s Smif-n-Wessun: Reloaded, the four men appear in the same Watch Loud vignette, remembering Dah Shinin’ hit “Sound Bwoy Bureill.” Released after the album, this Dancehall-influenced song would be a club hit for the Brooklyn, New York pair. Musical and menacing at once, Steele and Tek recall the video being anything but staged, from first girlfriends, to family members all creating the sense of a major squad. Additionally, both men decry some of the homophobic lyrics of the 1995 single, now stating that they welcome all lifestyles and listeners.

As interesting, it is revealed that the hard-percussion based track was created with Heltah Skeltah in mind. Rockness Monstah and Sean Price however, were not feeling it, as they crafted their own debut, 1996’s Nocturnal. So that said, Mr. Walt turned the basis over to Evil Dee and Steele, who Reggae-fied the track with scratches, additional vocals, and more—making a hardcore classic. The LP was recorded in D&D Studios, which closed its doors the same week Dah Shinin’ turned 20.

#BonusBeat: Ruck and Rock did pretty well finding their own Beatminerz-produced hit, “Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka,” this one handled by former member (non-Dewagarde brother) Baby Paul.
