Did DJ Mustard Just Give Rihanna, Kanye West & Paul McCartney’s Single The Boost It Needed? (Audio)

Despite all of its star-power, “FourFiveSecond,” Rihanna’s single, featuring Kanye West and Paul McCartney hasn’t really been the sort of impact Heads may be used to from a RiRi opening look. Especially given that Unapologetic was three years ago, this is big stuff. Moreover, the single pushes Rihanna’s booming vocals, along with those of Sir Paul and ‘Ye into the more stripped-down sound commanding Pop music at the moment. This is a departure from the Roc Nation songstress’ typical club-moving dominance.

Well, DJ Mustard—who most certainly has the formula for club hits as of late, really rolled up his sleeves and went at the single with his own take. The song about angst, looking for the weekend, and coming out of one’s skin with stress and tedium gets charged with those MPC pads, triggering warmer sounds, some vocal effects, and a bigger choral crescendo.

After Kanye West gave Chief Keef’s “Don’t Like” that high-profile push a few years back, is this move what the song might need to win?
