Rare Juggaknots Demo Recordings To Release, Showing The Crew’s Magic (Audio)

If you’re not up on The Juggaknots, you need to be. Back in Bobbito’s Fondle ‘Em Records days, the crew morphed into Underground Hip-Hop luminaries, alongside MF DOOM, The MHz (RJ2, Camu Tao, Copywrite, Tage Proto, Jakki Da Mottamouth), Kool Keith, and Cage.

Originally signed to Elektra/EastWest Records, New York City clique The Juggaknots—compromised of brother and sister Breeze Brewin and Queen Herawin, as well as Buddy Slim would break through with Fondle ‘Em. 1996’s Clear Blue Skies LP garnered high praise on vinyl and cassette, before a re-release less than 10 years from its original pressing.

Also a Fat Beats Records employee, Breeze would grab a lead role in Prince Paul’s Hip-Hopera, Prince Among Thieves in 1999. Additionally, the Brewin would appear on LPs by Aesop Rock, J-Zone, Marco Polo and others over time. Additionally, the ‘Knots’ follow-up a decade after the first, Use Your Confusion, welcomed Slick Rick and Sadat X to the cypher.

Sporadically making appearances, as was the case after “Control”—where Breeze thought Kendrick Lamar may be (and if you listen, who really knows…) name-checking him, The Juggaknots remain active. Still, it’s those lo-fi recordings, image-driven around pre-Mayor Rudy Giuliani New York City and stream of consciousness that Heads tend to gravitate towards.

Chopped Herring Records, who has been behind early Action Bronson, Your Old Droog, and Meyhem Lauren & Buckwild’s Silk Pyramids is taking on Baby Pictures, a 1989-1993 compilation of early Juggaknots tracks—limited to a run of 400. Eight self-produced joints come alive in the snippets, which would have been wild, had they been shared on the proper format:
