Celebrate 25 Years of A Tribe Called Quest With This Incredible Mix (Audio)

This has been a landmark year for A Tribe Called Quest. After celebrating the 20th anniversary of their Low End Theory album being certified platinum in February, yesterday (4/17) marked 25 years since the debut of their groundbreaking album, People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rhythm. To celebrate the milestone anniversary for ATCQ, and for Hip-Hop, Wax Poetics and Who Sampled commissioned an incredible mix by DJ Chris Read.

In addition to re-visiting the classic cuts from the album, Read digs into the crates and explores many of the songs that fueled the samples on the album, including music from Roy Ayers, Lou Reed, The Isley Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder and more. In speaking with Wax Poetics, Tribe’s DJ/producer, Ali Shaheed Muhammad said ““We were like virgins. If you could capture and pull out the chemical make up of your dreams coming true—it’s happening and at the same time you’re a teenager—if you could extract that, it would be euphoric for all ages and all time periods. And I think that was what was in that album, because we were living our dreams.”

Check out the mix below and read the full Wax Poetics article and tracklist for the mix here.
