Fabolous & DJ Clue Compile Friday Freestyles With Plenty Of Bonus Songs (Mixtape)

In the last five years, few high-profile MCs have used the free-mixtape format as effectively as Fabolous. He’s gone retail too, but the Brooklyn, New York star is gifted in assembling material aimed at his core fans, in between his mainstream-tinged albums and features.

Never one to shy away from cool concepts, Fab followed his Soul Tape run, with Friday Night Freestyles. Desert Storm Entertainment’s most successful star reconnects with his mentor DJ Clue. Both artists chose touchstone instrumentals, primarily from the 1990s, and went in, freestyling them into 2015 form. While the tape—including its Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan-inspired artwork, features many renditions Heads have heard this spring, there is a lot of new material. The Street Fam is there, among the 14 tracks, along with fellow Desert Storm alum Joe Budden, and another contemporary, N.O.R.E.

Instrumentals from Nas, Mobb Deep, Mad Lion, Jay-Z, and Smif-N-Wessun are touched, among others. Fabolous was diligently studying those days—which DJ Clue’s mixes and club appearances had a lot to do with. Now, he’s shining a light on the essence, along with himself in this free mixtape.

Are throwback-minded freestyles one of 2015’s signature promotional tools? Is Desert Storm regularly passed over as one of Rap’s more talented crews/labels?
