Killer Mike Names His Favorite MCs and Talks Deep Hip-Hop History With Snoop (Video)

Killer Mike is the latest guest on Snoop Dogg’s GGN. The Run The Jewels co-founder brings some flammable treats for Tha Doggfather, as the two wax poetic about a range of topics. Snoop, a confirmed R.T.J. fan, asks Mike about linking up with El-P.

“You spend your whole life looking for a sound…,” Mike says, explaining how the Fort Greene, Brooklyn partner suited his energy, aggression, and love of boom-bap. Amidst the discussion, Mike touts, “There’s gonna be Run The Jewels ’til the wheels fall off.” He also confirms Run The Jewels 3, the third installment (fourth counting El’s production work on R.A.P.) from the Adamsville/Brooklyn tandem.

Mike also says that the duo studied EPMD, N.W.A., Run-DMC, and the Geto Boys on how to be a great on-stage group. “Just be a dope mothafuckin’ group, with a DJ,” Mike reveals, as the duo’s overarching goal.

The discussion grows to include Mike complimenting Snoop on his “cool” factor. Bigga places Snoop, Too Short, and Dom Kennedy in a class of their own.

Snoop also breaks down some powerful history between the South and the West. He opens up about The Geto Boys and The Convicts being deeply present during the recording of Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. Snoop also admits to being down with UGK in the early ’90s, a bond that was based around “weed.”

Lastly, Snoop finishes the segment asking Mike some powerful questions (popular in the GOAT debates Hip-Hop Heads love). MC Lyte vs. Queen Latifah, Rakim vs. Ice Cube…Killer Mike answers each, with more than just a selection. The historians will love this casual discussion…
