Styles P’s Friday Freestyles Borrow Beats From Redman and Kendrick Lamar (Audio)

Styles P continues his Friday double feature freestyles. This week’s installments find him taking on beats from a recent Kendrick Lamar release and a vintage Redman throwback.

On “Ghost Night,” he carries on the recent tradition of covering 90s classics, borrowing Redman’s “Tonight’s Da Night,” from 1992’s Whut? Thee Album. Having worked with Redman extensively over the years, Ghost is clearly not one of the intended targets of D-Block partner Sheek Louch’s critique of MCs rapping over 90s beats without knowing their history.

Styles goes contemporary on “Ghost Institutionalized,” laying a verse over the intro to Kendrick Lamar’s “Institutionalized.” The track, which carries a heavy Erykah Badu/Andre 3000 influence, is a significant departure from the grimy beats that often attract Styles’ ear. Check out both below.
