Chris Rivers Drops a Freestyle Over Classic Bone Thugs & Do or Die. TGIF. (Audio)

Another Friday, another release from Chris Rivers. The MC formerly known as Baby Pun continues his weekly lyrical assaults, unloading aggressive, rapid-fire, and complex verses over an impressive array of production styles. This week it’s the Midwest’s turn, with Rivers first re-invigorating the classic sounds of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s “1st of tha Month,” the Cleveland rap group’s Grammy-nominated single from E. 1999 Eternal (which turns 20 on July 25). After a few bars of that, Rivers turns to Chicago trio Do or Die’s “Po Pimpin,” a platinum-selling 1996 single.

Dubbed the “1st of the Month Pimpin Freestyle,” it follows last week’s “Catfish Love,” a re-imagined adaptation of the classic Zapp track, “Computer Love.” Before that it was his “Ain’t No Half Steppin‘” freestyle, an homage to Big Daddy Kane featuring Termanology. There is method to his madness, however. All of these weekly gems are in anticipation of M.C. (Medicated Consumption), his forthcoming mixtape. Check out the latest freestyle here.
