With just over two weeks until the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton hits theaters, the excitement and anticipation over the film is palpable, to say the least. Buttressed by the forthcoming reunion tour, public discourse about some of rap music’s most prolific young artists has reached a fever pitch, and it seems that every day a new conversation is invigorated. Today is no different, thanks to an appearance on Philadelphia, Pennsylvania radio station Power 99.

On the Rise & Grind Morning Show, Ice Cube is joined by his son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr.  (who plays Cube in the movie), actor Jason Mitchell (who plays Eazy-E) and director F. Gary Gray as they discuss the film’s importance, not just as a documentation of a historic chapter in rap history, but also an examination of the music industry and the teenagers who launched a movement that changed music forever.

At 10:17, the conversation turns to the film’s soundtrack, with Ice Cube as the point person. When asked if the film’s score will include any new music or just revamped and reworked classics, Cube shares that Dr. Dre himself is working on some new material, set to drop in the near future (August 1, to be exact).

The guests also touch upon the film’s auditioning process, why they chose not to shy away from addressing the A.I.D.S. epidemic, whether Ice Cube still has hard feelings over the way things ended with N.W.A., and more. Check it out.
