Big Boi Debuts His New Sound With Phantogram on “Fell in the Sun” (Audio)

Apart from their handful of Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors collaborative songs, Big Boi and Phantograms aim to make Big Grams its own thing. Following the reveal of the September 25 EP’s tracklist and artwork, the Decatur, Georgia-to-Greenwich, New York trio unveiled their first look: “Fell In The Sun.”

Like Run The Jewels’ progression from Killer Mike and El-P’s dabblings on R.A.P., this first glimpse of the chemistry makes it clear that Big Boi is no longer the host of the party. Few have heard Daddy Fat Sax strain his cadence this way, emphasizing the beat—more like what Heads have heard from T.I. than anybody in the Dungeon Family. However, the subject matter of fashion, cars, and smooth operation is deeply consistent with 20-plus years of superior rhyme-writing. Phantogram offers a complex bassline that combines Trap with New Wave. The duo’s vocals enhance Big’s essay for a vibe-driven song that makes the Big Grams anticipation heavy.
