Hit-Boy & James Fauntleroy Flip Shanice’s Smile Into a Frown (Video)

Back in 1991, Shanice released “I Love Your Smile” one of the happiest songs released until…”Happy.” The song was instantly catchy and, inculcated by its title, put a smile on even the maddest of faces. Now, reigning beatmaker Hit-Boy (Kanye West, Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce) has released a song that not only flips the catchy hook from the song, but the concept, generally.

While Shanice sang about thinking of the man she loves and how his smile made her feel, Hit-Boy recruits James Fauntleroy who expresses sentiments completely contradictory to those of the 90s R&B singer. On “That’s What I Get,” Fauntleroy launches into a bitter diatribe about a number of women he’s encountered who have burned him in one way or another–taking him for his money, dating several other men and leaving him for the next best thing. The song is like Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison” on steroids, and even quotes that hit’s refrain of “never trust a big butt and smile.”

As we’ve moved from the days of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Love & Hip-Hop, is this song more in step with the times than Shanice’s?
