Ja Rule & Irv Gotti Team With Paramount For Series About Murder Inc.

Following the blockbuster success of N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, an onslaught of Hip-Hop biographies are coming to large and small screens. Last week, it was announced the Warner Bros. had optioned the rights to Sugar Hill Records and its co-founder Sylvia Robinson. Now, it appears that ’90s and 2000s label Murder Inc. is the latest subject of a major biopic. According to label star Ja Rule, Paramount Pictures is behind a dramatic TV series. Speaking to VIBE, the onetime multi-platinum MC/singer revealed, “It’s a great project, and we’re telling the Murder Inc. story in-depth,” he explained. “It’s going to be a drama series, and we got Paramount as a partner. It’s gotta be raw and uncut.” Rule and label founder/producer Irv Gotti will serve as executive producers.

Originally a label founded under Def Jam Records distribution, Murder Inc. would become responsible for the careers of Ja Rule, Ashanti, Vanessa Carlton, and Lloyd, among others. Additionally, during its prominence, the label would also work with Nas, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, and sign Charli Baltimore. The label was famously involved in a feud with 50 Cent and G-Unit, in addition to later conflicts with DMX and Ruff Ryders.

Under Universal Motown, Murder Inc.’s last official release was 2008’s Lessons In Love album by Lloyd.

Additionally, Ja Rule currently stars in a 2015 MTV reality series, “Follow The Rules.”

In the interview, the onetime Irv Gotti protege stated that Paramount is shopping the “in depth” series to Showtime and HBO.
