Cooked Ones: Mobb Deep’s Prodigy To Publish Cookbook & Second Memoir

Mobb Deep co-founder Prodigy has been among the group of Hip-Hop artists that have successfully transitioned into publishing. The Queens, New York native born Albert Johnson released 2011 title, My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep’s Prodigy with author/journalist Laura Checkoway, through Touchstone/Simon & Shuster Books.

More than four years later, the platinum-selling MC has now announced two follow-up titles. The self-proclaimed H.N.I.C. will publish a cookbook and a second memoir, focusing on his recent incarceration experience. The two books will be titled Commissary Kitchen and The State vs. Albert “Prodigy” Johnson. Both 2016 releases are co-authored by veteran music and pop culture journalist/editor Kathy Iandoli.

Per a press release announcing the plans, the cookbook will be different than Mobb Deep fans may expect. The release calls it “part cookbook, part anecdotal storybook, [that] details Prodigy’s prison experience through his meals. Some of the recipes will be classic prison offerings, while others will serve as the catalyst for greater stories throughout his three-year prison term.

From learning how to maintain his diet in the face of suffering with sickle cell anemia, to witnessing the emotional toll prison has on inmates especially during the holidays, the book’s ten chapters will amuse the readers, as well as provide more talking points to the current debate about inmates’ living conditions and prison reform.

Between 2007 and 2011, the former Loud and G-Unit Records artist was incarcerated in New York’s Middle State Prison Facilities following multiple unlawful weapons convictions. That experience, the basis of a recent lecture at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute Of Technology, will be chronicled extensively in the second memoir.

Additionally, Infamous Books is planning to release the novel written by Mobb Deep and G-Unit affiliate Mazaradi Fox. The Queens, New York MC (born Jamal Green) was murder in his hometown while riding in a vehicle on January 3, 2014. No title has been announced.

In 2014, Prodigy and partner Havoc released Mobb Deep’s eighth album, The Infamous Mobb Deep. Featuring Nas, Snoop Dogg, and Bun B, the album was a Top 50 debut for the duo.
