Joell Ortiz Wrecks A DJ Premier Beat Like A Supa Star (Video)

Joell Ortiz’s new collaboration album with producer Domingo will be released tomorrow (March 15). The project, titled That’s Hip-Hop, is an ode to music that puts a premium on top-notch lyricism, and Ortiz is happy to oblige. The Slaughterhouse spitter also invited several other respected wordsmiths to join him in carrying the torch for the culture, including veterans like Kool G Rap and Billy Danze (from M.O.P.), as well as young guns like Snow Tha Product and Token.

As part of his promo run for the album, Joell joined the Tony Touch show on Sirius’ Shade 45, and ripped a quick verse. Tony asks for 8 bars from Ortiz, as he drops the instrumental to Group Home’s “Supa Star,” one of DJ Premier’s most beloved beats. Ortiz wastes no time getting to it and delivers far more than 8 bars, going in for a sweet 16.

While it’s not the first time Joell has flowed over a Preemo beat, having worked directly with him on “Project Boy,” it’s still a treat to hear Ortiz’s flow paired with Premier’s finest.
