DJ Shadow Takes Turntablism From “Sideshow” To Hip-Hop’s Main Stage (Audio)

For more than 20 years, DJ Shadow has been a dependable source of turntable wizardry. More than simply a deft scratch DJ, the Northern California native is a top producer too—able to extract magic out of MCs and groups such as Blackalicious, Paris, David Banner, Phonte, and even Depeche Mode. Sometimes, those worlds have beautifully collided—where the Solesides co-founder brings all his talents and passions to one place, cutting up the dustiest of grooves.

“The Sideshow” is the latest case of this. After years of honoring greats like Grandmaster Flash, Steinski, Coldcut, and others in narrative scratch records, this uptempo inclusion from The Mountain Will Fall (June 24) is highly technical, spirited, and spans the eras and sub-genres of Hip-Hop. If you want the kind of music that helped Shadow become a top-draw in the DJ world, he’s still making them in that vain.
