Beep Beep: Michelle Obama & James Corden Ride Out With Missy Elliott (Video)

With all the hullabaloo involved in holding the office of President of the United States, it’s sometimes hard to remember that Barack Obama and his family are people who enjoy life’s simple pleasures. When mundane activities like making a grilled-cheese sandwich or simply going for a late-night drive are either forbidden or only allowed to take place within highly controlled environments, getting out of the White House and the related duties therein is a welcome diversion. In 2015, President Obama appeared as a guest on Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” web series, and as fans well know, it provided the president with a rare opportunity to briefly get away from the Oval Office and enjoy some down time. Today, it was First Lady Michelle Obama’s turn, and she took full advantage of her mini getaway, thanks to some carpool karaoke with James Corden.

Corden is the host of the “Late Late Show” on CBS and has become a viral-video sensation thanks to the success of his “Carpool Karaoke” series. The concept is simple enough: Corden drives around with celebrity-guest friends while having breezy, humorous conversations and playing music. Stars like Stevie Wonder, A$AP Rocky, Adele, and many others have made appearances but this week, Corden may have landed his most influential guest yet in Mrs. Obama. Picking her up from the White House, Corden speaks with the First Lady about her forthcoming departure from the world’s most famous address and about the aspects of “normal” life that she is most looking forward to.

But the real fun happens while the two sing along to Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” and “This is For My Girls,” featuring Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Rowland, Zendaya, Janelle Monae, Lea Michele, Missy Elliott, and others. Heads may recognize the song from Mrs. Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative, which aims to educate the more than 60-million girls around the world who are not able to pursue schooling. In a particularly special moment of Corden’s video segment, Missy gets in the back seat for an impromptu karaoke session, and it is all girl power in the whip.

Mrs. Obama also shares details about her humanitarian work in Liberia and Morocco, the story behind the First Couple’s secret-service names, and more.
