MC Lyte Will Star In “love jones, ” The Musical

Since its release nearly 20 years ago, love jones has stood as one of film’s most beloved love stories. Larenz Tate and Nia Long star as two star-crossed lovers who meet in a poetry club in Chicago and struggle to make a relationship work, despite their strong feelings for one another. The film is beautifully shot and showcases an elegant depiction of Black Love rarely seen before or after. In addition to the striking cast and arresting cinematography, the soundtrack is an integral part of the movie. It features the sultry sounds of Maxwell, Dionne Farris, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Lauryn Hill and more. It is a veritable who’s who of the resurgent Soul sound that blossomed in the mid to late 90s. As such, it is not surprising that the film is now being reinvented as a musical.

As reported by The Grio in July, love jones, The Musical will be written and directed by Theodore Witcher who wrote the screenplay for the film. MC Lyte posted a poster of the production via Instagram, confirming that she would star in the play, alongside Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, Dave Hollister, Raheem DeVaughn and Chrisette Michelle.

The musical will be met with high expectations, given the enduring love for the film. In April, Larenz Tate spoke with The Breakfast Club, and he did not rule out the possibility of a sequel. “If the script was right…Nia Long and I have been talking…She and I were saying it’s been both a blessing and curse. The blessing is that people still want to see that story continue. The only curse is if the script is not right. We’ve seen a couple scripts that just wasn’t right, and fortunately, we have taste, so we don’t want to do anything that doesn’t make sense. The audiences, we really regard them very highly, and we don’t want to cheat the audiences and the fans of that movie…I feel like it will do really well.”
