Ab-Soul Returns With His First Official Release In Nearly 2 Years (Video)

It’s been more than two years since Top Dawg Entertainment’s Ab-Soul has released an album. The lyrical sharpshooter has been very low profile in that time period, as everyone else on the label’s roster, from Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock to ScHoolboy Q, Isaiah Rashad and SZA has released material. Soulo, however, has only surfaced here and there, blessing an occasional remix, and occasionally seeing certain previously unreleased songs surface.

Last month, however, things got interesting, as two rapid-fire posts by Top Dawg, himself, indicated that Ab-Soul’s album was fully done, and a new project from Jay Rock was near completion. In the post about the Black Lip Pastor, Top said the final mixes had been handed in and a release date was coming soon. The releases would be numbers 4 and 5, of what TDE promised would be 6 in 2016, following albums by Kendrick, Q and Isaiah.

While the release date still has not yet been announced for Soul’s album, tonight (Sept 29) brings a new release from the artist. “Huey Knew” is trademark Ab-Soul, as he attacks a dark track with the kind of dense wordplay that no doubt will require multiple rewinds. Also featuring Da$h, it is unclear whether the record is the first single from the forthcoming album, or just an appetizer before the main course is served. In any case, it’s a welcomed return from one of Hip-Hop’s most respected lyricists.
