Talib Kweli & NIKO IS Light Bars On Fire to Smoke Wack MCs (Video)

Earlier this month, Talib Kweli showcased his fortitude as an MC, arranger, record-label executive, and creative director – all in one project. The Javotti Media founder Awful People Are Great At Parties, an audio compilation meant to showcase the vast talents of his signees, who include Cory Mo, K’Valentine, Space Invadaz, and NIKO IS. Born in Brazil, NIKO is a Florida-raised MC whose Javotti debut came in 2014 with Brutus. Today (November 16), he appears alongside his longtime mentor and collaborator in a new video promoting the aforementioned compilation.

“Smoke Somethin” is a hearty serving of Kweli’s lyrical prowess, and the humorous one-liners he’s known for. His first verse opens up with “barbershop rap, ’cause you takin’ a fade,” while he lounges somewhere tropical with his young co-MC. Produced by Phil 4 Real, the song is unrelenting in its aggression and is, despite its title, not exactly a smoker’s anthem. In fact, the only thing getting smoked here are weak rappers (“true OGs got crazy heart, you niggas rap like you never seen lady parts”). His quips to MCs who dare step to him incorrectly remain potent throughout the whole track, including when he says “fuck ’em all, just make your mark/my whole life is a stage, nigga play your part.” Filmed in Miami, Florida, the video was directed by David Sakolsky of Gusto Gold Productions.

Just last month, NIKO IS dropped “Mofongo,” a loosie showcasing his trilingual abilities ahead of his forthcoming project, Good Air.
