The Roots, Joell Ortiz & Busta Rhymes Take Their Shot & Deliver An Amazing Performance (Video)

Last night (December 5), The Roots, Joell Ortiz and Busta Rhymes hit Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show stage to perform their “Rise Up Remix” of the song “My Shot” from the recently-released The Hamilton Mixtape.

Black Thought, Ortiz and Busta give a dramatic performance, providing a less story-driven rendition of Miranda’s song that takes its underlying theme of “rising up” and relates it to their own lives — conveying the importance of determination and ascension. Under pressure, the MCs more than take their shot—they hit their mark. With Busta’s career kicking off in the ’80s, Black Thought jumping off in the ’90s, and Joell breaking through in the 2000s, this is an exceptional example of harmony across Hip-Hop eras. Skill is the great equalizer.
