Act 2 Of DJ Premier & Miguel’s Collabo Is For The Love (Video)

March 13 UPDATE: The video has been released to “2 Lovin U” by Miguel & DJ Premier:

Original February 21 post:

Just over one week ago, Miguel was nominated for two Grammy Awards for his 2015 Wildheart album, and its corresponding single “Coffee.” That ByStorm/RCA Records LP featured Tha Dogg Pound’s Kurupt. However, Hip-Hop Heads who were paying attention may have noticed that it was also planned to feature a track from DJ Premier.

In the lead-up to the #2 charting LP, Miguel’s Instagram followers may have caught Preemo and Miguel in the lab together, with a brief song snippet. The song they worked on together would evolve, and be re-recorded by Miguel. He included that track, “Damned” on the deluxe version of the album.

“The snippet you heard on Miguel’s Instagram, mine is the original” DJ Premier says in a press statement. “Miguel and I were vibing at a session and just really seeing what we could come up with. What we came up with was a dope, but rough version of what you hear today. Miguel and I had deadlines and we never got around to finishing it. We both really believed in this version of the track and we both felt very strongly that it needed to come out and be released as a single. Miguel and I approached the label about releasing it and everyone was on-board,” Premier clarifies.

Now, as Preemo launches his new venture, TTT (To The Top), another label in addition to his Year Round Records imprint, the song arrives in full. With the same lyrics as before, this version will forever be known as “2 LOVIN U.”

The song traces dangerous love, the kind that cuts the heart. To accent the pain perfectly, DJ Premier uses scratches at the chorus (with singing from Miguel) to drive the point home. Those classic drums are at play too, all saying “damn!” Listen close, and it appears to be The Lady of Rage (“Afro Puffs”), and The Soulsonic Force (“Planet Rock”) as some of the cut up vocals.

In the last year, Preemo has done out-of-Hip-Hop work with Yuna, and his own artist, Torii Wolf.
