LG Is Planting The Seeds Of His Rap Career & Looking To Grow Even More (Video)

Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, LG’s musical blood comes from both his family and the city in which he was born and raised. At the age of seven, he began to explore his natural talents, eventually dropping his debut mixtape Cinco in 2011. The title comes from his childhood stomping grounds, the fifth ward of NOLA, which includes parts of  the globally recognized French Quarter but also areas far less affluent. Nevertheless, the fifth ward is home to some of the city’s richest cultural history thanks to Congo Square and other prominent African-American cultural institutions and traditions. As a result, LG’s brand of Hip-Hop blends the street-wise with the feel-good, a sentiment running through New Orleans’ difficult yet triumphant history.

“Secret Garden” is one such song, and its video is a testament to the Crescent City’s natural beauty. In a city park populated with the breathtaking Oak trees and Spanish moss famous the world over, LG rhymes about his blessings and his struggles. “N**** grew up on the block, outside in my socks,” he raps before saying “If you don’t work, you don’t eat/So every day I grind hard.” Joined by Paasky, LG uses the record to remind us all of the power in pain. Perhaps inspired by the 1911 children’s novel The Secret Garden, in which an abandoned orphan finds solace in a locked garden for which only she has the key, LG’s video seems to suggest that there is a safe and beautiful place for all of us – we just have to look harder.

With performances at A3C in Atlanta and SXSW in Austin (where Timbaland invited him on stage to freestyle for thousands of people), LG has begun to share his talents well beyond hometown stages. He has opened up for Drake and Curren$y, working with the latter on the song “Battlefield.” “Secret Garden” appears on LG’s most recent EP, Food For Thought. LG will be performing alongside KXNG Crooked, Elzhi, Rapsody, 9th Wonder, Nick Grant, and others at the Ambrosia for Heads x My Executive Room SXSW Showcase on Wednesday, March 15.
