Hear The Song That Got Replaced By “The Beautiful Ones” On Prince’s Purple Rain (Audio)

Prince’s career and mainstream recognition changed drastically with 1984’s Purple Rain. While the Minneapolis, Minnesota musician had enjoyed two Top 10 hits with 1999, this album (and the film it accompanied) tipped the scale and cemented a living legend. Nine tracks and less than 44 minutes long, the #1 album has since reached 13-times platinum, and is remembered as some of Prince & The Revolution’s finest work. However, those nine tracks were not the first ones recorded during the sessions. Purple Rain is a magnum opus that speaks to revision, care, and iteration.

On June 23, deluxe and expanded editions of Purple Rain will release, just two days short of the Warner Bros. Records album’s 33rd birthday. Both packages boast 11 additional songs recorded in ’83 and ’84 that were not included on the album (the expanded edition has a third disc of 15 remixes, studio edits, and extended versions of songs). Per a label press release obtained by Pitchfork, six of the 11 new songs have not previously reached the storied bootleg circuit of Prince’s music. “Electric Intercourse” is a track that has circulated by way of a 1983 hometown concert performance and appearances on other collections. The song was previously intended for inclusion on the Crystal Ball 2 collection, which was curated by fan votes. That Prince-sanctioned outtakes compilation was never released.

In preparation of the Purple Rain expanded packages, NPG/Warner Bros. Records has released “Electric Intercourse,” one of the tracks emerging from Prince’s storied Paisley Park vault. According to a report on Radio, the track was swapped with “The Beautiful Ones” ahead of release. The songs feature strikingly similar drum sounds and arrangement. Additionally, the piano riffs echo the famed album title track, as shown in studio footage:

Based on the Wikipedia surrounding Prince’s unofficial discography of bootlegs and shelved titles, the un-circulated songs appear to include “The Dance Electric,” “Love & Sex,” “Our Destiny,” “Possessed,” and “Velvet Kitty Cat.” “The Dance Electric” may likely be a demo/alternate take of the 1985 single Prince penned for former band-mate André Cymone:

Prince’s Vault Of Unreleased Recordings Is Detailed By Jimmy Jam & Close Associates (Video)

One year ago this week, musician/producer Jimmy Jam told Access Hollywood Live about Prince’s archives of unreleased music. “Trust me, the vaults are amazing!,” claiming “probably thousands” of songs. “We actually talked about [releasing the music]. We had a conversation about that. [Terry Lewis and I] told Prince [that] we wanted to produce [the vault anthologies]. That was one of the things on our bucket list. He laughed, and he said, ‘Okay, what would you do?’ I said, ‘The first thing we do is we go down to the vault, and we get all those records’—’cause there’s [Morris Day & The Time] records, there’s Shelia E. records, there’s great records in there. ‘Let’s get those records and start working with those.’ He said, ‘Okay.’ So yeah, I think he [wanted to release it], and it’s great music.”

In the year prior to Prince death (one year ago this month), The Artist personally oversaw the latest remaster of his best-selling album, which was also nominated at the Grammy Awards for “Album of the Year” at the 1985 event (a category he would not win despite two nods).
