D’Angelo’s Sweet Brown Sugar Re-release Includes Redman, AZ & DJ Premier Collabos

Twenty-two years ago this month D’Angelo released his celebrated debut album, Brown Sugar. That EMI Records effort would debut at #22, and march onward to platinum status and four Grammy nominations. The album, and its five-year hold before a follow-up introduced one of the modern stars of Soul music. D’Angelo immediately proved that he certainly could sing, but he was also a clever writer and a gifted producer. While new on the scene, the Virginia native gathered support from A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad and crew engineer Bob Power, Raphael Saadiq, and Angie Stone for his 10 tracks. The album has aged beautifully as both art as a defined chapter in the sound and message of Michael Eugene Archer.

On August 25, Virgin/UMe is re-releasing Brown Sugar with a plethora of rare additional tracks. According to Rolling Stone, the cuts will include DJ Premier mixes to several songs, as well as remixes by Erick Sermon, King Tech, and Dallas Austin. With these mixes, MCs including AZ, Redman, and Kool G Rap make appearances. At the time, AZ and Gang Starr were part of the EMI family. Many of these mixes appeared as vinyl B-sides and on rare promotional vinyl and CD. Instrumental and a capella versions of several songs are also packaged.

Also included is a 20-page booklet featuring rare photographs, lyrics, and an essay by journalist/filmmaker Nelson George.
