Sean Price Goes Ape On Alchemist Production In The 1st Video To His Upcoming Album

Duck Down Music dropped a video for the title track off Sean Price’s upcoming posthumous album, Imperius Rex, in which the late, great MC goes ape over a wild Alchemist beat. Keeping in line with the gorilla theme prevalent in much of his work, the rhymes and visuals are fittingly inspired, in part, by the iconic Planet of the Apes movie franchise. In the Steve Dabal and Josh Heineman-directed video, an animated P stars as “Caesar the leader,” proving that the self-proclaimed “ape,” as opposed to the lion, is truly king of the concrete jungle.

Set in an overgrown, post-apocalyptic New York City, P and associates swing from lampposts, battle authorities and even post up in front of his own tribute mural on Bergen Street and Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. A nod to the film franchise’s 2001 reboot, at the end of the video, they are transported to a rendition of the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. via a portal in Brooklyn’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Monument archway. The statue, instead of the 16th U.S. President, is a depiction of the rapper, himself. Similar imagery is also featured on the album’s cover art, revealed today, as well.

Imperius Rex is set to release August 8, this summer, and will feature an insane lineup of special guests, including some surprises like Method Man, Raekwon and Inspectah Deck of the Wu-Tang Clan, the late Prodigy, Styles P and MF DOOM. Of course, longtime collaborators like fellow Boot Camp Clique members Smif-n-Wessun, Duck Down co-founder Buckshot and Heltah Skeltah group mate Rockness Monstah will grace the album, as well.
