J. Cole Has Broken The Record For Most First Day Album Streams Ever

On Friday (April 20), J. Cole released his fifth solo album, KOD. The Dreamville/Roc Nation release has people talking, from its thematic “4/20” commentary on drug use to its lesson-filled attack on unnamed peers who have criticized the Fayetteville, North Carolina MC/producer.

As chart watchers see if J. Cole will achieve his fifth consecutive #1, he has already given very strong indicators that it will. KOD has broken Apple Music’s United States record for most streams in the first 24 hours of release, with a reported 64.5 million, according to The Verge. The previous record holder (roughly a million below the new mark) was Drake with 2016’s Views. Notably, Drake premiered Views on Apple Music and iTunes, before distributing the release to other platforms. J. Cole’s release was on Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and others.

Meanwhile, Cole achieved the same feat with Spotify’s US market, with approximately 36.7 million first-day streams. The mark does not beat the worldwide record achieved in 2017 by Ed Sheeran (over 56 million first-day streams of Divided). The service tweeted the news of Cole’s domestic achievement:

KOD, an acronym believed to mean Kidz On Drugz, King Overdose, and Kill Our Demonz, is 12 tracks without features. As he addresses on the LP, this is a trademark that Cole has used dating back to 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
