Apollo Brown & Locksmith’s New EP Combines Lyricism With Personal Reflection (Audio)

Richmond, California native Locksmith has a knack for mixing witty lyrics with a flow that delivers his message with a punch. It serves him well as a battle rapper, but perhaps it’s even better when he’s constructing a body of music. These attributes are heavily on display in his newest project with Apollo Brown. Lock and the Detroit, Michigan-based producer have come together to put out their joint EP, No Question.

Available for streaming now and available for purchase tomorrow (June 15), the seven-song musical work is short in length but packed with stories Locksmith has experienced over the years, delivered by the MC in only a way he could. During a Billboard interview, the Berkeley grad explained how easy it was to mesh with Apollo, and how his vision for the project formed itself effortlessly.

“When we were talking about doing it, I was like, ‘Well, yeah, I know every beat is gonna be banging, so all I have to do is be creative and come up with the subject matter,'” he said. “I feel like I got to spread my wings at the studio and just let go. It was liberating.” It’s a sentiment he also shared during an interview with HipHopDX. “It was fucking awesome,” he told the site. “It was like I get to sit up here and just rap and just really concentrate on the flows. I got to focus on how I wanted to express myself, just from a lyrical standpoint. So yeah, it was really refreshing man.”

Previously, the duo released the title track as a single. Ambrosia For Heads premiered “No Question” last month as it brought together Brown’s bright keys and catchy vocal loop with Locksmith’s rhymes about being bullied because of his religion. He then attacks the music and movie industries in his second stanza. They also previously released the single “Litmus.”
