Once a backup dancer for Whodini on the Fresh Fest Tour, Jermaine Dupri earned a name by producing and writing Kris Kross’ Totally Krossed Out LP in 1992. While Daddy Mack and Mack Daddy were signed to RuffHouse/Sony Records, Dupri opened his imprint the next year. The roster would include Atlanta, Georgia-based R&B act Xscape, whose first three albums went platinum. He followed with Da Brat, a Chicago, Illinois rapper influenced by West Coast G-Funk. The label also achieved success with artists such as Jagged Edge, Bow Wow, and Anthony Hamilton. JD also became a star on his label with a platinum debut in 1998.

As noted as the label’s penchant for ATL-based and young artists, Jermaine Dupri’s “So So Def” productions and remixes became an institution. JD co-wrote and produced #1 singles for Kris Kross, Usher, Monica, Mariah Carey, Paul Wall, Alicia Keys and others.
