Snoop Dogg Joins DJ Green Lantern Behind The 1’s & 2’s To Blend Hip-Hop With Funk (Mix)
In his extensive career, Snoop Dogg has seemingly done it all. He has recorded countless albums and mixtapes, he has starred in numerous movies, shows, and launched web series. Meanwhile, Calvin Broadus has assumed various aliases and personas. He is many things: a G from Long Beach, a player that hangs with Bishop Don Juan, an herbal connoisseur, a youth football coach, a media agency founder. In 2013 he became Snoop Lion, converted to Rastafarianism, and recorded a Reggae album. That same year he dropped a joint album with Dâm-Funk under the name 7 Days of Funk. More recently, Snoop went Gangsta-Gospel. In the 2010s, Doggy Dogg also started DJing professionally and took on a new alias, “DJ Snoopadelic.” With a far-reaching playlist, Tha Doggfather has played all kinds of legendary venues and festivals since. In 2014 he even had a residency in Las Vegas.
Diehard Snoop fans know he has a ton of mixes on his Soundcloud page, but they are more playlists than original projects. So, his recently released Funk-Hip-Hop mixtape with DJ Green Lantern, Live From The Mothership, is kind of a big deal. The name alludes to Parliament Funkadelic’s infamous UFO stage prop and remixes Parliament’s 1975 Mothership Connection artwork.
This DJ duo serve up heaping piles of funky tunes that have almost all been touched by Green’s able hand or graced by Snoop’s fly phrasing. Most cuts are classics that most Heads will recognize but they throw in a couple obscure flavors too. For example at about the midway point of the mix, Slave’s “Watching You” drops in. Snoop interpolated the harmony from this track into “Gin And Juice.” There are a few guests here too. Boskoe and Dimond Ortiz come in to freak the talk-box in a couple spots to accentuate the Funk.
Green’s remixes and edits are often subtle on this mix, but his blends of Nas’ verse from “Nasty” with Cameo’s “She’s Strange” and Raekwon’s verse from Jodeci’s “Freek’n (Remix)” with Zapp’s “Computer Love” are standouts here. GL even swing in a couple more contemporary jams like Tuxedo’s “Rotational” and Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up” to round out the project. Be prepared to groove.
