Suge Knight To Serve 25 Years In Prison For The Killing Of Terry Carter (Video)

Suge Knight has spent more than a third of the last 20 years behind bars. He will now likely spend all of his next 20 in the same place. Today (September 20), the co-founder of Death Row Records and onetime manager of Dr. Dre, Tupac, DJ Quik, and others accepted a plea deal for the 2015 killing of music executive Terry Carter. According to TMZ, the Compton, California representative agreed to a 28-year sentence after being charged with murder in 2015. Knight pled no contest to voluntary manslaughter, instead of murder. If he were convicted at trial, Suge potentially faced a life sentence.

The 53-year-old Knight fatally struck Carter with his red Ford Raptor pickup truck on January 29, 2015, in the parking lot of Tam’s Burgers in Compton, California. Knight, who previously alleged the Heavyweight Records founder and Short Khop manager was a friend, had just been escorted off of the set of Straight Outta Compton. That film, which dramatically portrayed Suge, was co-produced by Knight’s former business partner and star artist, Dr. Dre. Another man in the exchange and subsequent hit-and-run was Cle “Bone” Sloan. Bone, an actor from Training Day and director of Bastards Of The Party, was seriously injured by Knight’s pickup.

Upon slamming into Carter with his pickup, Knight fled the scene before eventually turning himself in to authorities. He has been detained ever since in more than three years of judicial deliberations, which include other charges. During that period, Terry Carter’s family asked the public to view the fatal hit-and-run to see what happened. Per TMZ, Knight’s plea deal sentence will honor that time already spent behind bars. If Suge lives to serve the rest of his sentence, he will the face three additional three years of parole.

“Suge’s sentence is stiffer than a typical voluntarily manslaughter because he had a prior felony conviction in 1997,” reports TMZ. “He also got an extra five years because the Carter killing was deemed a ‘serious and violent’ felony. He got an additional year due to his truck being a deadly weapon.”

Between 1996 and 2001, Suge was behind bars for a probation violation stemming from the night he and Tupac Shakur were gunned down while driving on the Las Vegas strip. Shakur succumbed to his gunshot wounds 22 years ago this month. Meanwhile, Knight was in treatment less than one day for his injuries. Since leaving prison in 2001, the onetime mogul born Marion Knight lost his company in bankruptcy, experienced several incarcerations, while also being shot and physically assaulted.
