Nelly – Rick James ft T.I. (Prod. Pharrell)

Pharrell Williams is having the kind of year that Timbaland had in 2006. Nothing—nothing isn’t working for this 20-plus year veteran behind the boards. Pharrell helped make Daft Punk a household name, again (on two different records). He gave Robin Thicke a single so good that my 62-year-old mother is now buying Robin Thicke albums. If that wasn’t enough, Pharrell produced a Nelly single that completely reinvented the 13-year-mainstream vet.

Following “Get Like Me,” “Rick James” pulls from The Chappelle Show sketches (the same ones that arguably prompted Chappelle to re-consider his platform). However, it’s the slapping bassline and Nelly’s always-melodic vocals that make this club-ready music that has a Disco/House backbeat and makes you want to dance right in your computer chair. Admittedly never the biggest Nelly fan since Nellyville, this makes me very excited about M.O., hittin’ us next week.
