Decades before Sherane, there was Bonita. The apple of A Tribe Called Quest’s eye had a suggestive name of more produce, and Heads fell in love the minute Q-Tip compared the buxom beauty to “a Hip-Hop song.” The fictional character has become a lasting reference in Hip-Hop, and for a generation of Heads seeking idyllic companionship from a female.

During Kanye West’s Yeezus Tour stop, he featured two shows in New York City/Brooklyn, with A Tribe Called Quest opening. While no more dates currently in sight for Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed and Jarobi, the moment was a critical link between the ’80s/’90s and the 2000s/2010s. Those who were there championed the concerts as one of the best, ever. For all of ‘Ye’s elaborate showmanship and choreographed stage shows, A.T.C.Q. unveiled a true and livin’ Bonita Applebum, as model Stephanie Santiago, covered in full Tribe camouflage.

Needless to say, for many Heads who were there, or who see this HQ video, the crush is still real.
