Wale & Stokley Williams Have Some Of Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues At The 2013 Soul Train Awards (Video)

On The Gifted, Wale linked on several compositions with Mint Condition lead singer Stokely Williams. The Minneapolis vet teamed with the DMV star on “LoveHate Thing,” the LP’s second single which, among other items, examines Wale’s curious relationship with his region, while being their breakout star since 2006 (as he points out on the record).

For the 2013 Soul Train Awards, which aired last night (December 1), Stokely and the backing band threw on an homage backdrop of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 single, “Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler).” The late Gaye is also from D.C., so a fitting reference on multiple levels for Wale to call back to.

The outcome was among the show’s highlights, and a great reminder of the depth of Wale’s third studio album—and Marvin’s MASTERFUL 11th.
