Diamonds Are Forever: Jay Z Gives J. Cole His Original Roc-A-Fella Records Chain On Stage (Video)

While J. Cole did not join his Roc Nation leader at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, despite being nominated for Best Rap Album, the two reconvened this week. Last night, while Cole took the stage at Madison Square Garden, his fans were treated to surprise appearances by Kendrick Lamar, and Jay.

While on stage, Jay Z presented one of his recent proteges with a token of his respect and gratitude. Hov gave Cole what is said to be his original—or first Roc-A-Fella Records chain and medallion. Cole, who grew up as a Hip-Hop Head at the time of Jay’s artistic and label ascent, received the gift on film—courtesy of a fan in the audience:

Like Death Row, No Limit, and Cash Money Records, Roc-A-Fella is a label associated with its jewelry, from its mid-1990s rise through the 2000s, when founders Jay Z, Kareem “Biggs” Burke, and Damon “Dame” Dash parted ways.

Now housed under Def Jam Records, the label and its logo remain in tact, and are used on releases from the likes of Kanye West and Jadakiss, among others.

Days after J. Cole spoke at length about his relationship and admiration for Nas, how do you feel about this symbolic knighting of sorts?
