Royce Da 5’9″ & DJ Premier Announce Group, Joint Album: PRhyme

Today (September 24), DJ Premier has announced his first group since Gang Starr, the legendary duo that spans more than 25 years back to debut album No More Mr. Nice Guy. This unit will be an extension of a decade-plus of working with Royce Da 5’9″.

Before Slaughterhouse and around the time of Bad Meets Evil, DJ Premier laced the “Boom” for Royce, who would take the Game/Rawkus Records single, and sign to Columbia. Since Rock City (which featured other sonic collisions from Nickel Nine and Works Of Mart), Preem and Royce have crossed paths continuously, prompting a number of collaborations, perhaps most notably, “Hip-Hop.”

Today’s news pairs the men in a group: PRhyme—which was alluded for Heads who missed it. In last week’s vignette video, less than two minutes long, it explains Royce’s sticking bar: “This is for the real Hip-Hop niggas who would never ever, ever ask me am I here to replace Guru.”

He is not.

“I want people to appreciate the fact that we didn’t compromise in lieu of the environment. In order to try to change the way that people digest music, we had to take a leap of faith,” said Royce in today’s press release. Killer Mike, Jay Electronica, Common, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Slaughterhouse, Mac Miller and Dwele are said to be confirmed guests on the LP without a current release date.

Premier expounded “The bar has to be high. For this album to be another body of work and another chapter for both of our lives.” Moreover, reports indicate that samples will only come from the music of producer/musician Adrian Younge (whose record store was visited in the visual), known for his albums with The Dramatics, Ghostface Killah, and most recently, Souls Of Mischief. “I’ve never sampled just one artist, I’m known for my reputation and my creativity,” Premo continued. “I wanted it to be my traditional thing where I sample everything I find, but I am really proud how the project came out and Royce is one hell of a pusher.”

Royce played a heavy hand in the concept too. “I started going through Adrian’s catalog and it was just making me a fan of his,” the Slaughterhouse MC said. “It was really inspiring me to want to make music. As Premier started sending me music and I started writing, it was falling into place. It was making me excited about going into the studio.”

While PRhyme heads for their release date, the hoodie is for sale now.
