Tha Dogg Pound Electrify Some G-Funk With Snoop Dogg & Kokane (Audio)
Twenty years removed from Dogg Food, there seems to be two styles to Tha Dogg Pound. Daz and Kurupt can be laid back, smoked out, and mellow—even if the verses never really put on the kid gloves. On the other hand, as evident in their “What Would You Do?” days, DPG can also be fired up and aggressive, delivering stick-and-move verses in the booth. Since that heralded debut, it seems to be much of the former than the latter, with some hit-making exceptions (see 1999’s “Who Ride With Us”).
“Skip Skip” puts the fire back in the belly of Dat Nigga Daz and Kurupt The Kingpin. Joined by mentor Snoop Dogg, and Eazy-E/Above The Law (both of whom feuded with DPG in the early ’90s) associate Kokane, this song is where G-Funk meets P-Funk. Jerry Long (a/k/a Kokane) does his best George Clinton impersonation (just as he did on The Chronic), while Daz, Kurupt, and Snoop kick up dust with carved out lyrics, a revived energy, and a true aim at the party with a pepped-up roller-rink type beat.
Who knew that a WC ad-lib associated with C-walking could be the title of a return to the clubs for the Philly-to-Long Beach clique. Is this the sound Dogg Pound ought to rock with to gain momentum headed towards their 25th anniversary?
