Eminem Returns With a Phenomenal Song About Never Giving Up (Audio)

As he’s done on a plethora of films—including his own, Eminem has been tasked with the soundtrack centerpiece to Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw. The newly-appointed GOAT MC (within nine months of Ambrosia For Heads’ readership, anyway) goes 12 rounds, lyrically on “Phenomenal.”

Produced by DJ Khalil (Self Scientific), the song showcases Em’s fast-rap ways. Inside the verse, which aims to inspire all to find their inner-fighter. Eminem uses the opportunity to describe his ongoing comeback, from an MC on hiatus in the mid-2000s, to an artist out to again grab Grammy’s, plaques, and drive the fan discussion. In his bars, Eminem interpolates Jay Z lyrics, draws comparison to The Notorious B.I.G., and relates to Cypress Hill’s B-Real (all three past collaborators on songs).

Memorable (with “phenomenal” chanted endlessly), the rapping itself is some of the sharpest bars from Eminem in the last 12 months. As he’s done for so long, regardless of high or low-profile projects, Khalil switches up the beat, showing that he remains one of the most invigorated producers in Rap.
