Jay Rock Targets July For His Sophomore LP, ScHoolboy Q Hints At 2015 Album

In the conversations about TDE, Black Hippy, and the finer Hip-Hop of the last five years, sometimes Jay Rock can get lost in the discussion. The Watts, California MC (who signed to Warner Bros. Records in the late 2000s) was in fact the first Top Dawg Entertainment artist to have a CD in stores, thanks to 2011’s Follow Me Home, which was co-released through Tech N9ne’s Strange Music.

Debuting on #83 on the Billboard Top 200, the LP was released the same July as Kendrick Lamar’s breakthrough, Section.80. Together, with the early 2011 releases of ScHoolboy Q’s Setbacks and Ab-Soul’s Longterm Mentality, the four breakout members of TDE made the year a benchmark for the next four.

2015 may be headed in the same direction as 2011. With three of the four Black Hippy artists touted to release albums this year, things are interesting. Sitting down over the last two days, all attentions are on Jay Rock again, and sooner than Heads may have realized.

“We got the project comin’ within the next month or so; we’re gonna announce it soon,” Jay Rock told HOT 97 over the BET Live weekend. “The world been waitin’, [so I am telling] ’em, ‘it’s comin’.”

ScHoolboy revealed he’s hard at work in his home-studio. “I’ma just stay quiet, ’til somethin’ come out,” said the Los Angeles, California native, adding that 2015 will see something of his own.

Can TDE balance quality and quantity in the traditions of DMX, MF DOOM, and Tupac?
