Almost 15 years after releasing PeteStrumentals, Pete Rock released a follow-up album on June 23, and with it came an infusion of the sampling and hard-hitting beats for which the Hip-Hop icon is revered. Released by Mello Music Group, PeteStrumentals 2 serves as not only a reminder of why the Chocolate Boy Wonder is one of the best to ever do it, but thanks to DJ and producer J Rocc, the album has taken on a second life as a springboard for inspiration and innovation.

The Stones Throw representative and Beat Junkies veteran has put his own spin on the LP, molding it into a new animal of a megamix while maintaining Pete Rock’s signature soulful perspective. While PeteStrumentals 2 serves as the building blocks for the mix, J Rocc has slyly imbued it with bits and pieces of Pete Rock’s older classics, forming a patchwork of the past and present sounds while forging an entirely new yet nostalgically familiar future.

Check out the mix in its entirety here, and check out the video for “Cosmic Slop,” a Parliament Funkadelic-inspired track from PeteStrumentals 2.
