Black Thought Pumps Cypher Adrenaline In This Dazzling Display (Video)

Black Thought and The Roots rock the spot on television five nights a week. However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t shut things down in one fell swoop. Tariq and Ahmir hit the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards with the kind of vocal precision that they made famous, when cyphers were how MCs cut their teeth.

From the South Illadelph, Pennsylvania to the ATL, The Roots (as Black Thought and Questlove) had everybody “wanting more” in this recorder-worthy moment. Joined by the cast of Hamilton, the table is set with substantial bars about race, sexism, and the divide between the have and the have-nots. Thought comes in over Kool G Rap & DJ Polo’s “Road The Riches” with a flow that Giancanna would appreciate. Black makes pointed social commentary about the economy, the shift from “Good Times” to “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” and why bodega diets aren’t sustainable. Notice how how he hits the beat absolutely flawlessly, using his cadences as added percussion.

This is an incredible moment from one of Rap’s reigning showman, with Questo on the cut, and Hamilton in the wings showing why their production is something for your mind and soul.
