Even in Animated Form, Method Man Shines (Video)

Back in 2014, Boston MC M. Dot enlisted the help of Method Man on “Shine,” a triumphant celebration of self-determination and unity that also features Dominique Larue, an exceptionally talented spitter from Columbus, Ohio and siren Katy Gunn. The foursome’s end result is a well-rounded track that in no way feels like a thoughtless melange but rather a carefully curated mix of distinctive voices which each contribute immediately identifiable layers to a song whose message conceptualizes the idea of the many becoming one.

Now, the song’s message has been cartoonized, but in the best way possible. The animated music video is reminiscent of videos by the Gorillaz and revolves around a dystopian society that looks like an image out of an Ayn Rand novel. However, the song’s voices are there to lead society out of the darkness, serving as urban superheroes there to provide citizens with the tools to break out of their own dismal surroundings, both literally and metaphorically. Check out the video below, and remain on the look-out for M.Dot’s highly anticipated Ego and the Enemy – a two-disc affair featuring Da Beatminerz, Hi-Tek, !llmind, Marley Marl, and more – slated for an early 2016 release.
