Pete Rock & Torae Are Here To Remind Us Who’s Been Putting In Work (Audio)

Coney Island, Brooklyn’s Torae continues to prove himself as one of New York’s most consistent MCs, releasing classic material with fellow underground heroes like DJ Spinna, Marco Polo, Pumpkin Head, Rapper Big Pooh, Shabaam Sadeeq, and Skyzoo during the more than ten years since releasing Make Room At The Top. Collabs with the likes of Sean Price, Talib Kweli, and Wale have earned him some significant exposure, and his loyal fans continue to shell out serious support for his solo work, particularly for his latest project. His forthcoming LP Entitled managed to collect more than $10,000 in a Kickstarter campaign, and with an all-star lineup including DJ Premier, Pharoahe Monch, Phonte, Saul Williams, and more, it promises to be a serious contender for his best work.

In 2012, Torae & Skyzoo released a track called “The Get Up,” and today Torae drops “Get Down.” Featuring production from the one and only Pete Rock, the track is the latest single from Entitled (following the Preemo-produced “Saturday Night”), and it’s a prime example of Torae’s deft lyricism, which hasn’t gotten as much applause as some of his contemporaries. “But looky here, looky here, dudes startin’ to care about who really be spittin’ that magic back in the air/I ain’t signed by Hov or endorsed by Dre, shit I been had somethin’ to say…” Check it out below, and watch this video to see Torae and the Chocolate Boy Wonder working on “Get Down” in the lab.
