Lauryn Hill & the Weeknd Light Up the Stage with Special “In the Night” Duet (Video)

One of the many rumors surrounding last week’s Grammys telecast was that the Weeknd – whose Beauty Behind the Madness was nominated for Album of the Year – would be performing a duet with Ms. Lauryn Hill, a match-up sure to delight both younger and older fans of contemporary Soul music. That duet never took place, at least not at the Staples Center. However, it did happen on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show, which taped a full week of shows in Los Angeles as part of the Grammys fever that swept the nation. As the show’s pre-announced musical guest, the Weeknd’s appearance was no surprise, but he brought along Hill for a rendition of his single “In the Night” which had likely never before been heard live.

The duo’s introduction from host Jimmy Fallon was enough to turn the live studio audience into a boisterously applauding crowd; after mentioning the Weeknd’s two Grammy wins this year (Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance), Fallon introduced him without making any mention of Hill, which adds a fantastic element of surprise to the performance. With a cello and full band, he handles the first leg of the set himself, but then she walks on stage and nothing was ever the same.
