Royce 5’9″ Blacks Out on Another Song & Announces Free EP (Audio)

In just under a month, Royce 5’9″ will be releasing Layers, his sixth studio album and first since 2011’s Success Is Certain. In the years since, he has proven himself to be an integral part of various groups like PRhyme and Slaughterhouse, but his longtime fans have always known of his solo prowess, as well. With his forthcoming LP, he will be aiming to peel away the many facets of his skill set, and if the lead single “Tabernacle” is a harbinger of the kind of rhyming Heads are in for, Layers may prove to be the most important album of his solo career thus far. Naturally, that momentous potential translates into countless hours in the studio and likely some very difficult decisions about which records to include, and which to cut. However, as he recently shared with Fader, all is not left on the cutting room floor.

“Dead President Heads” may not have made the final track listing for Layers, but it will appear on an EP called Tabernacle: Trust The Shooter. “My original concept was to release a b-side record to coincide with the release of ‘Tabernacle,'” Royce tells Fader. Reportedly arriving before the April 15 release date for Layers, the EP will be free and comprised entirely of new music. At nearly seven-minutes long, “Dead President Heads” is an exercise in a stream of consciousness. And while the level of lyricism won’t be a surprise to most listeners, it is worth emphasizing this is a song that did not make the album. Stay tuned for more details about the EP’s release date.
