DJ Premier Shares the First Taste of Another Winning Collaboration (Audio)

DJ Premier’s track record for collaborating with young artists outside the confines of the traditional Hip-Hop sound is arguably one of the best. From his work with Anderson .Paak to Yuna, Premo’s ability to curate heat without changing the sound of his musical partner makes him the true embodiment of pushing the envelope while also maintaining his own authentic voice. Today, some work with singer-songwriter Torii Wolf has surfaced and the song is just the first taste of her forthcoming album Flow Riiot, which will be produced entirely by the Gang Starr founder.

“1st” is buoyed by the keys of a mournfully played piano, but the undeniable influence of Premo’s perspective gives it a driving tempo that marries Wolf’s haunting, breathy vocals in a sound that flirts with the boundaries of contemporary Soul, Electronica, and stripped-down Hip-Hop sensibilities like scratching and sampling. As Premo expressed in a press release shared by Pitchfork, Torii’s music is “just very left field—reminiscent of a Björk or something like that. She is so unique and versatile; she writes, sings, and is an accomplished guitarist and drummer. But image-wise, there is no comparison. Subject-wise, Torii is in a whole different place.”
