Baby, Baby, Baby…TLC Has Completed Its First Album Since 2002

TLC released their last album, 3D, following a difficult 2002. On April 25 of that year, founding member Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Honduras. In November, the surviving members Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins released TLC’s fourth album, to platinum success.

It has been over 13 years since, and TLC has not released another album. T-Boz and Chilli have released Christmas songs, as well as new material packaged with their TLC: 20 greatest hits compilation, but the onetime LaFace/Arista Records R&B/Pop superstars have let their 1990s and early 2000s work remain on record shelves without new company. Notably, both artists—unlike Left-Eye, opted against solo LPs.

After a wildly successful biopic released by Vh1 in 2013, TLC had a tremendous resurgence in popularity. Audiences re-enchantment with the group led to calls for another album. In 2015, TLC responded and crowd funded what was to become their fifth LP. T-Boz and Chilli raised more than $430,000 towards the recording, writing, and producing of the yet-to-be-titled work. Included in the donors was reigning Pop princess Katy Perry, who put down $5,000 to slumber party with T-Boz.

Now, in mid-2016, those plans are coming to fruition. The group’s official Facebook page reports that recording is complete—with 15 songs in the can. Furthermore, when said album releases, Chilli and T-Boz are planning to tour. Stay tuned as more details arise.
